blurb
Trey and Aurora have hit the road with Catalyst for the Until Sanity Tour. For Trey, adjusting to life as a vampire while getting on stage in front of screaming fans every night proves difficult. The limelight forces him to do things he swore he wouldn't, like feeding from the occasional fan. Keeping his secret from the band is harder than Trey expected, and the dull ache of hunger is always with him. Aurora tries to help Trey adjust while attempting to further her career from the road. She continues to paint, determined not to lose herself in the media maelstrom that comes with being married to Trey Decker.
But strange vampires are popping up at concerts, and the newlyweds realize they may be in over their heads. They owe a powerful vampire a favor, and he’s come to collect. But the price is too high, and Trey’s band mates are at risk of becoming collateral damage. Will Trey and Aurora be able to thwart the forces working against them and ensure that everyone they love is still around to share in their success in the end?

excerpt
(Trey's Point of View)
I hadn't been on stage for all of five minutes when I felt the little buzz of power vibrating in the back of my skull. I was careful not to let it throw me off my game as I casually searched the crowd for the source. My first thought was that my vampire stalker was back, but she hadn’t generated a power buzz like this one. Aurora was backstage tonight – not like I’d mistake her power signature for anyone else’s – but it was clear that at least one vampire was standing in the crowd. When the song we were playing ended, I took my guitar off and walked back to the stand Chase and his drums were perched on. I grabbed a bottle of water and took a big drink, just to give myself some time to think. O’Shea started telling the crowd a story – leave it to him to fill in the silence – and I turned back around to scan for potential vamps again while he spoke. It took a moment, but I spotted him. He was sitting in the third row from the front, off to the left. He was even wearing a black suit, kind of like the ones the Emissary wear, but I couldn’t tell whether it had their emblem embroidered on the breast pocket or not. I met his gaze and held it, letting him know that I’d found him. He stared right at me in that way that vamps do when you just know they’re trying to read your soul, one wispy layer at a time.
He wasn’t just here for the show. That much was obvious. If he was Emissary, what on earth was he doing at a Catalyst concert? Certainly the Emissary had more important things to do than check up on Aurora and I, like tracking down Malena, for one. And if he wasn’t Emissary, well, that was even more confusing. I wished Aurora were sitting there in the front row. At least that way I would know she was trying to decipher the same questions I was. At least that way I would know she was safe. Instead, she was enjoying the show on a screen from the backstage lounge tonight, while simultaneously snapping pictures of several paintings to upload to her website so she could ship them back to The Waking Moon.
Then I realized there were two of them.
The second one was dressed like the first and was sitting in the lowest section off the floor to my left. He met my gaze as well, and I had to force myself to look away so the camera wouldn’t catch my stare-down on the big screens. O’Shea’s voice broke through my thoughts, and I heard him asking the crowd if it was okay if we slowed things down for a minute. The cheering that resulted was my cue to at least try and forget about the vamp in the crowd.
Like that was going to happen.
I set my water bottle down by my mic stand and leaned into the mic. “Let me see those cell phones in the air,” I said as the guys starting playing the intro to “Sweet Disguise.” I strapped my guitar back on and waved one hand back and forth to direct the crowd until the verse began. As I sang, I scanned the crowd again for the mystery vamps but they were both gone. I tried not to worry about it, not to wonder where they had gone and why they’d left in such a hurry, but it was easier said than done. I couldn’t for the life of me imagine why they were here. Even if I’d wanted to warn Aurora, I wasn’t capable of sifting through all the thought trails in the building to find hers. I’d tried on several occasions, but I could never quite manage to hone in on her specifically through all the energized, almost frantic thoughts, coming my way – more than half of which were about me.
The rest of the set seemed especially long after that, which made me feel like crap. The crowd was really into us, and I did my best not to be distracted. I’m even pretty sure it worked, but I was more than relieved when we finished the last song before the encore. I made my way to the dressing room at last. Aurora was sitting at her laptop, and jumped up when we all came into the room.
“I’m ready, I swear,” she said, hurrying over to the makeup chair as Chase plopped down in it for his zombie makeover.
I changed into my tattered suit, suddenly feeling more than a little ridiculous about the paranoia that had rattled my brain throughout the show.
Aurora was here. She was fine. In fact, everything seemed fine.
I started to wonder if I’d seen the vampires in the crowd at all. It didn’t make sense, anyway. Why would a vampire make an appearance in the crowd just to completely vanish moments later? Maybe I really had imagined the whole thing. Maybe I was in worse shape than I realized. I made a mental note to down some blood from the stash first thing after we finished here. I couldn’t help but scan the crowd again for the vamps when I took the stage as a zombie for the encore. No buzzing power, and no Emissary-looking mystery vamps. I was mostly relieved, and I focused on giving the fans the best zombie performance I knew how to give. Aurora was waiting for me in the lounge and we headed for the bus together. It wasn’t until we were about to climb the bus’s steps that we both felt it at the same time.
A power signature.
Aurora froze, her foot hovering just above the bottom step. She looked over her shoulder at me and said, “We have a visitor.”

blurb
When Aurora meets Trey, a famous singer and musician, she’s only hoping to get her fill of human blood for the week. The last thing Aurora expects is for Trey to make her feel alive for the first time since she was, well, alive. It begins with a casual painting lesson at her art studio, The Waking Moon, and quickly turns into a forbidden romance. Aurora is forced to hide her true identity from Trey, while keeping her relationship with the human a secret from other vampires in her Brood.

Trey’s band is recording a new album and with Aurora as his muse, Trey is writing songs like never before. After being hired by their record label to paint the cover of the new album, Aurora has a legitimate reason for spending so much time with Trey and his band mates. Aurora can’t deny the unexpected connection she has with Trey, which is fueled by glimpses into his emotions every time they share a kiss. Caught between two worlds, Aurora must attend celebrity award shows and vampire rituals, find time to feed, and protect Trey from the dangers of the night, all while preserving her secrets.

blurb
Catalyst frontman Trey is no stranger to chaos, but even the life of a rock star couldn't prepare him for the consequences of loving a vampire. Trey's life is in danger; threatened by the very group he must join to stay alive. His struggle to continue his career and release a new album with the band is marred by events that force him to ask a powerful Synod Elder for help.
Aurora has to keep Trey alive until she can make him a vampire, but her own kind will stop at nothing to prevent it. The head of the Emissary is having her followed, and if she can't figure out who is behind the violent attacks, Trey might not make it to the full moon. As Aurora battles her own kind, she's also plagued by the risk she's taking by changing Trey. Will her moon-given power be enough to carry Trey through the change, or will he be left floating in the wake of destruction?

character

image
Full name: Aurora Evins
Species: Vampire
Age: 23, but technically I haven’t aged since I became a vampire at 19.
Nationality: My father was Caucasian and my mother was Egyptian.
City or town of birth: Chicago, Illinois
Currently lives: Clearwater, Florida
Height: 5’8’
Weight: 115
Hair color: Black
Hairstyle: I wear it long and straight, or in big waves
Eye color: Green (Trey says they are the color of old-fashioned 7-Up Bottles.)
Personality: I’m a bit of a recluse. It just comes with the vampire territory. Maybe it’s partly because I’m an artist. I’m an observer. I’ve always been more into watching things unfold around me than jumping right into the middle of them. My OCD kicks in when I’m at work, whether it’s organizing my paints, mixing up a fresh batch of varnish, or arranging the way my work is displayed on the walls at my gallery. I don’t have a lot of friends, but being with Trey has taught me to open up a little. I’ve adopted the rest of the guys in the band as brothers They’re sort of stuck with me now whether they want me or not.
Likes: I love rain, which is convenient when you live in Florida. I also love Root beer (there’s just something nostalgic about it.) I love painting, and not just because my livelihood depends on it. Painting is therapeutic. I also apparently have a thing for guys who play guitar.
Dislikes: Alcohol. Not just because it tastes awful to my vampire taste buds, but because my parents and brother were killed by someone who was driving drunk.
Fears/phobias: I have a fear of death. I know most people probably do, but I think being immortal was the biggest thing that attracted me to being a vampire. There’s just something about the idea of not existing on this earth anymore that totally freaks me out.
Favorite color: Red.
Hobbies: Painting, hanging out at the local vampire hot spot called Club Sanguin, giving my best friend Mark a hard time, and more recently, sketching Trey while he works in the recording studio and beating all of the guys in the band at Guitar Hero.
Taste in music: Anything Trey sings. Lol. But seriously, I have eclectic tastes. I have a soft spot for pop rock and alternative music, though.
Talents/skills: Let’s talk vampire skills, since that’s more interesting. My moon-given talent is to be able to block my thoughts from the prying minds of other vampires. I’m able to ask for other abilities at each new full-moon cycle, but this is the one skill I have with me any time the moon is out. I’m also super fast, strong, and a bit on the sarcastic side.
Current job title and description: I’m the owner of an art studio/gallery called The Waking Moon. I named it after one of the names for the full moon in April because that’s the month I was made a vampire.

Full name: Trey Decker
Age: 22
City or town of birth: I was born in Clearwater Florida, and I still live there today.
Height: 6’ 0”
Figure/build: Slim, Athletic
Hair color: Dark Brown
Eye color: Light Blue
Tattoos: I have a tattoo of the band’s name and logo, Catalyst, on my chest on the right side.
Personality: I’m a hopeless romantic. I don’t fall easily, but when I have someone that I love, I want to spoil them and give them my heart completely. Living like that opens you up to getting hurt, but the rewards are worth the risk. I like to think I’m spontaneous. I’m pretty laid back and easy going, except for when it comes to my music and the band. I feel responsible for every note and every word I write in a song. I’m a bit of a control freak in that sense, so I like to be involved in the details in as much of the creative process as I can, from the moment we start writing new songs for a record, right down to designing the stage we use.
Likes: I like dogs. Cats make me sneeze. (Sorry cat lovers.) I like the ocean. I used to spend a lot of time surfing, but the band takes up most of my spare time these days. I like writing songs and being on stage. There’s just something about being able to tell a story with my guitar and my voice. I’m completely addicted to every aspect of my job. I’m the luckiest guy in the world that way. I love Legos. I’m like a 10-year-old. I even have a working guitar a fan made me out of Legos. It’s the coolest thing ever.
Dislikes: Fake people. Tabloids. Paparazzi that hide in my bushes in my front yard. (You know who you are.)
Fears/phobias: I used to worry that I was never going to find someone who could deal with my crazy life and my career choice. Aurora has changed all that for me…. Oh, Spiders! I don’t do spiders. They are pure evil.
Favorite color: Old-fashioned 7-Up bottle Green. ;)
Hobbies: Music, pretending that I know how to paint with Aurora, playing with my miniature pinscher Cowboy, hanging out with my bandmates.
Taste in music: I play rock, so I tend to listen to rock. I’m a big fan of Mayday Parade, Paramore, Jimmy Eat World, The All-American Rejects, and a bunch of other bands like that. I also love some of the classic bands like Kansas, The Eagles, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. My iPod has a weird combination of bands on it.

Favorite food(s): I love pizza and pasta. And Chinese takeout.
Disliked food: Sushi. I just don’t get it. I really don’t.
House/home: My house is huge. Too big, really. I went a little overboard when I was house shopping. Aurora calls it the mansion. I wish I could say that is an exaggeration. The pool is the best part, though. I did it all for the pool.
Current job title and description: Leader singer and rhythm guitarist in Catalyst.

Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?

Worst? That I’m a musician. Ha! Best? I’m fiercely loyal to anyone I care about. What you see is what you get, and I would go to the ends of the earth for those I’m closest to.

What are you most afraid of?

Spiders. I turn into a ninja whenever I see one.

What do you want more than anything?

To be happy. I want to be with the person I love, and hopefully try to find a balance with the other things I’m passionate about while I try to be a champion for her dreams.

What is your relationship status?

I’m off the market.

How would you describe your sense of fashion?

I’m a jeans and tee shirt kind of guy, but my job allows me to go to work dressed like that. When I’m going to an awards show or a red carpet event, I like to think I make a suit look good.

How much of a rebel are you?

Does dating outside my species count? I’ve gotten good at keeping secrets.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

Not that long ago I would have said having my record go Platinum, but now I think the fact that I’m still alive is a pretty good gauge of my success.

What is your current state of mind?

I have a hook in my head, and I’m anxious to pull my guitar out and get it all down on paper before I lose it.

What is your most treasured possession?

My dad took off when I was a kid. I didn’t understand it at the time, but I still have the guitar he left behind. It took me years to work up to picking it up and learning to play, but now music has become a huge part of my life. That guitar was a way I was able to feel close to him when he was nowhere to be found. I still cherish it.

What is it that you most dislike?

I’m not a fan of people who are fake. Or the paparazzi that hide in my bushes.

What is your greatest regret?

I don’t want to ruin the story for you, but I have huge regrets about the way I let a friend get hurt. I’ll never forgive myself for that.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

I like a woman who knows what she wants in life. I like someone who has goals and ambition, and someone who will come back at with a witty comment just as fast as I can throw them at her. I like someone who doesn’t take herself too seriously.

Character Name: Aurora Evins

Character Bio: I was born and raised in Chicago, but I moved out to Clearwater, Florida to be closer to my maker when I was made into a vampire 4 years ago.

clip_image004

Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?

My worst quality is that I tend to put up a wall and shut people out. It takes a lot for me to dare to be vulnerable with anyone. I’m working on it. My best quality is that I’m very independent and I go after what I want. I even own my own art gallery/studio called The Waking Moon.

What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?

Even though there are things that set me apart from other vampire fledglings, most days I just wish I wasn’t different. There are all sorts of expectations that come with it, and I don’t want to be anyone else’s version of who I am.

What are you most afraid of?

Being a vampire involves so many secrets. I don’t want to lose myself in the charade, or in the whirlwind that is life when you’re with a famous rock star.

What is your relationship status?

 Taken.

How would you describe your sense of fashion?

I’m pretty casual, but I do love to rock a nice pair of heels with jeans and a tank.

How much of a rebel are you?

I like to pretend that I’m one. I hate to conform, but really I’ve just never felt like I fit in with my own kind, and I was confused about how to act around humans. That’s all changing now.

What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?

Successfully opening and running The Waking Moon. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid. I’m really proud of it.

What is your most marked characteristic?

I’m a bit of a mystery. I’m sure most people, human or vamp, would see me that way.

What is it that you most dislike?

I don’t like being told what to do or how to do it. I pride myself on finding my way in this world, even if it means I take a wrong turn along the way.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

I’m a vampire, and super strength and crazy cool abilities come with the territory. I didn’t expect to find a human that could make me feel safe, and make me want to let someone else take care of me. Those are qualities that attracted me to Trey in the first place. He has this quiet confidence about him. He’s uber talented, but he’s not arrogant about it. He’s also the kind of person that would give you the shirt off his back. I also like a man who makes me feel girly, and Trey does that for me.

Who do you most admire?

I really look up to my maker, Antonio. He’s always been there for me, and acted like a father figure, even when I rebelled and made that hard for him. I didn’t appreciate just how hard it is to be responsible for another person until I met Trey and realized just how much danger I had put him in.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I wish I was quicker to open up to people. I know it’s a survival skill, and in my world it’s even necessary, but I’m working on being able to trust people.

What is your motto?

 Eat or be eaten…. Kidding!

about the author
imageI write fantasy for teens and adults. I've been creating stories for as long as I can remember. I'm also an avid reader, and I blame Amelia Atwater-Rhodes and her book "In The Forests Of The Night" for my vampire obsession. I absolutely love vampires and anything paranormal, but I enjoy fantasy of all kinds.
I'm addicted to Oreos and Raspberry Dr. Pepper from Swig. When I'm not writing I enjoy traveling, playing board and card games, killing zombies on the Xbox with my hubby, and spending time with friends and family.
Music has always been a passion of mine. I've been playing drums since I was 12. I also love playing guitar, singing, and going to concerts.
My favorite color is green, and the uglier the shade the better. I get bored of my hairstyle easily which has resulted in me having many looks in the last ten years.
I live in Southern Utah with my husband and son. I'm currently preparing for the release of the third installment in the Blood And Guitar series, Fangs And Fame, which will be out August 25, 2014.
